What is it about?

Childhood asthma is a common condition associated with acute worsening or exacerbations. The study by Lowden and Turner investigated the association between an index exacerbation and future risk for an asthma exacerbation. In this systematic review of the literature, the authors report that based on their analysis, an increased risk for future exacerbation exists. The severity of the initial exacerbation though does not increase the odds for a second asthma exacerbation. The authors though did not study specific biomarkers and triggers of the exacerbations included in the study. This is an area of future study which may reveal the underlying pathophysiology associated with the risk for a second asthma exacerbation. .
