What is it about?

Using a Delphi survey the top five research priorities identified were: 1) Patient understanding of asthma control; 2) The clinical and cost-effectiveness of respiratory nurse interventions; 3) The impact of nurse-led clinics on patient care; 4) Inhaler technique; and 5) two topics which were jointly scored: prevention of exacerbations and symptom management.

Why is it important?

This is the first UK study to identify research priorities for respiratory nursing. To grow research relevant to patients living with chronic respiratory disease nurses need to engage with research. Respiratory nurses already influence the delivery of respiratory healthcare, but their contribution to research in respiratory care is not as noticeable.

Perspectives

Respiratory nurses are an important part of the respiratory workforce and could make an important contribution to research which will potentially enhance the care delivered to patients –publication of these priorities should guide both UK and international respiratory nursing research.
