What is it about?
Serum YKL-40 and sputum YKL-40 are reflecting different processes within the airways. Serum YKL-40 might reflect a more systemic inflammation opposed to sputum YKL-40 that might reflect more local: airway inflammation.

Why is it important?
It is thus apparent that serum YKL-40 and sputum YKL-40 might contribute to characterize a novel phenotype among severe asthmatic patients.
Perspectives
Ykl-40 might be important in a multicomponent analysis that involves structural changes in asthmatic airways and phenotyping of asthma.
