What is it about?

From French hospital administrative database, we describe the epidemiology of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis in France from 2009 to 2018. The mortality rates is 45% at 5 years. This poor prognosis is correlated to underlying pulmonary diseases (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, emphysema, fibrosis, or lung cancer) and general conditions (malnutrition, age over 65 years, male gender).

Why is it important?

This study is the largest published cohort, including more than 17,000 patients in France. Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis is an emerging disease, with a poor prognosis. In a low tuberculosis incidence country, this infection occurs in patients with multiple comorbidity worsening patient's prognosis.

Perspectives

The alarming morbidity and mortality rates associated with chronic pulmonary aspergillosis justify specific screening for this chronic infection in some chronic pulmonary diseases such as emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, fibrosis and lung cancer.
