This is a clinical study to assess if low-dose chest computed tomography can help in the diagnosis pneumonia in elderly patients.

Why is it important?
Populations are ageing in the developed world. Pneumonia is highly ranked amongst causes of hospitalisation in the elderly and is the leading cause of death from infection in patients aged 65 years or more. Its diagnosis is particularly challenging in the elderly patients. We showed that low-dose CT could help to exclude diagnosis of pneumonia and potentially help in their management
Perspectives
Studing elderly patients was challenging and gave very interesting results. This study should encourage clinical research in this population, because they present specific characteristics. Furthermore, correct diagnosis of pneumonia is essential for correct implementation of treatment but also because the overuse of antibiotics is a major public health burden.
