What is it about?
Guidelines for the treatment of nontuberculous mycobacterial disease (e.g. by Mycobacterium avium or Mycobacterium abscessus) have been published. Yet, in a large survey among physicians in Europe and Japan, we learned that only a small minority of patients actually received treatment regimens recommended in these guidelines. Adherence to guidelines has to be improved to improve treatment outcomes and prevent the emergence of drug-resistance.

Why is it important?
To have guidelines is not enough, education about these guidelines and why to adhere to them is essential to optimize treatment outcome, particularly in such severe infectious diseases.
Perspectives
Adherence to guidelines has to be improved to improve treatment outcomes and prevent the emergence of drug-resistance. This study is a wake up call, that we need to set up educational programs to make physicians aware of the guidelines and the risks of non-adherence to them.
