What is it about?
Oropharyngeal swab cultures in children with cystic fibrosis are not helpful for ruling out lower airway Pseudomonas infection and are not associated with structural lung disease, lung inflammation or admissions for respiratory exacerbations

Why is it important?
Findings from this study do not support the routine use of OPS cultures in ruling out lower airway infections and highlight the need to develop a more robust feasible method for early detection of lower airway P. aeruginosa infection which will help guide treatment and prevent or delay the progression of destructive lung disease in young children.
