What is it about?

While protecting against SARS-CoV-2 transmission, FFP2 and surgical face-masks cause various physio-metabolic effects. Effects are more pronounced in FFP2 masks and are clinically concerning in elderly. Outcome is asking to rethink on mask policies.

Why is it important?

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, face masks have become a mandatory part of our new-normal lifestyle. While protecting against the coronavirus transmission, face-masks may cause side effects on our normal respiration and hemodynamics. Therefore, effects from medical masks should be compared upon wearing duration and age in order to realise any further needs for reforming the present global-pandemic policies.

Perspectives

Intelligible global-pandemic policies should reconsider the type and wearing durations of recommended face-masks, based upon age and/or cardio-pulmonary conditions.
