What is it about?

Smoking (active or passive) is associated with more than 70% of COPD cases. Despite the clear evidence of the smoking cessation benefits in COPD, more than a third of these patients continue to smoke despite knowing they have the disease or are experiencing significant symptoms. Given that nicotine dependence in patients with COPD is usually high, these patients should be treated with various interventions (counseling, psychological-behavioral support, and pharmacological treatment). There is a lack of evidence to support that smoking cessation reduction or harm reduction strategies have benefits in COPD patients. The long-term efficacy and safety of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation in COPD patients’ needs to be clarified, so their use is not recommended.
