What is it about?
Bacterial lysates are known to reduce respiratory tract infections. These infections are commonly associated with asthma exacerbations and infant wheezing. In this meta-analysis we discuss the effect of bacterial lysates in the prevention of asthma exacerbations and infant wheezing episodes.

Why is it important?
Bacterial lysates are a cheap and safe therapy option in the prevention of respiratory tract infections. They show promising results in randomized studies in the prevention of infant wheezing and asthma/COPD exacerbations. As they are cheap and safe, they could be a game changer in asthma management.
Perspectives
Many studies suggest bacterial lysates are effective in the prevention of asthma exacerbations and wheezing in children. However, in adults almost no studies have been performed or published. This meta-analysis hints on a possible positive effect in asthma, whereas a randomized controlled trial in asthma adults is still lacking.
