What is it about?
Aging usually leads to the loss of muscle function. This process is also present in respiratory muscles, which are affected by changes occurring in the whole organism and those that are more specific for them. Moreover, aging normally coexists with different diseases that further deteriorate the structure and function of respiratory muscles. Intense exercise can also cause damage in respiratory muscles of elderly individuals but this can be followed by tissue repair. Accelerated aging can also occur prematurely deteriorating respiratory muscle function.
