What is it about?

The pathogenesis of bronchiectasis differs between chronic lower respiratory tract infection and interstitial pneumonia (IP). However, there has been no report that compared their morphological characteristics by quantitative analysis of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images. We aimed to compare the morphological characteristics of bronchiectasis between patients with non-tuberculous mycobacteriosis (NTM) and those with IP.

Why is it important?

The morphological characteristics of bronchiectasis were different between the IP patients and those with NTM, which might be associated with the pathogenesis of bronchiectasis and edematous changes of the bronchial walls.

Perspectives

Based on the results, we would like to conduct additional studies to determine if there is an association with disease prognosis or not.
