What is it about?

Metabolic carts obtain patient/subject results of cardio pulmonary exercise testing. For proper interpretation of the CPET results, metabolic cart technical performance should be checked on regular base. Daily through gas and volume calibrations and manufacturers recommendations and quarterly with biological control checks plus yearly by metabolic simulator testing.

Why is it important?

Differences between metabolic carts (brand, type, model, software version), can leed to variation in results of human testing. Validation and verification of metabolic cart performance through biological control and metabolic simulator testing is the only way to asure stability of reading obtained with a metabolic cart.

Perspectives

This publication is an example of metabolic simulator test results from 4 different brand metabolic carts. All devices in "normal" day-to-day use for CPET patient- and subject testing. Results used for clinical interpretation. From these findings, specific maintenance and repair of metabolic cart(s) have been initiated. QC program, for repeated metabolic simulator testing and biological control testing has been adopted as a standard procedure for all metabolic carts. With this article we hope to raise awareness for the importance of standardized QC for metabolic carts. Guidelines, similar like for spirometry testing, should be developed and published by societies like ERS/ATS, ARTP or ACSM/ECCS.
