What is it about?
Hypertonic saline is an effective treatment in a number of disorders with hyperconcentrated mucus, but its effects on epithelial cells have not been well elucidated. This study provides important insights into the mechanism of action of hypertonic saline, including the transient nature of its effect and the associated cell volume reduction. The authors explore the effects of repeated dosing regimens of hypertonic saline on apical water permeability, the contribution of ENaC blockade, and the accumulation of IL-8.
