What is it about?

There are moss species that have no openings to discharge their spores. Yet, these species have been able to cross mountain barriers in central Mexico so that they are found in northern as well as southern localities. It is proposed that the cleistocarpic mosses, as they are called, depend on certain external factors to release their spores. Agricultural practices may be among factors that contribute to spore liberation in mosses.

Why is it important?

Vascular plants, mosses, and other organisms use similar mechanisms to increase their ranges. Some of them may be undesirable and their dispersal methods need to be known.

Perspectives

Cleistocarpi mosses are usually very small and few were know for Mexico prior to this study.
