What is it about?

Seven adhesives were tested for their effect on polystyrene before and after light ageing. The impact of adhesives on general purpose and high impact polystyrene in the museum environment were investigated studying such factors as stability, impact on test material, working properties, aesthetics, ageing of the adhesive join and the question of reversibility. The paper provides information on adhesives for the repair of polystyrene objects in collections today.

Why is it important?

Plastic objects and materials have become a large part of our cultural heritage in the last hundred years. Polystyrene is one of the most frequent plastics displaying breaks and cracks and there are occasions when an adhesive bonding is necessary. It is important to choose an adhesive that will be stable over time and have as little impact as possible on the object. This study provides information for making informed choices for the preservation of the cultural heritage.
