What is it about?

The use of a lubricant increased the coefficient of friction of DLC contacts in comparison with the non-lubricated conditions, which is the opposite of the steel behaviour. The main reason for the deterioration of the low friction properties of DLC coatings at lubricated conditions is the shearing of the lubricant, which is trapped in the contact under high pressure, preventing contact between DLC asperities, which are known to result in super low friction. Nevertheless, with the use of a PAO base oil, both the coefficient of friction and the wear were always lower in DLC contacts than in steel contacts.

Why is it important?

This paper showed for the first time that the introduction of a lubricant into the DLC contact can deteriorate the super low friction properties of DLC coatings, emphasising the importance of the selection of appropriate, preferably low-viscosity lubricants for this type of contacts.
