A group of English and Scottish exiles settled in Frankfurt from 1554 until 1558. This article describes the turbulent first year of that conflicted community based on a number of newly discovered letters.

Why is it important?
This work presents a new chronology of events in the Frankfurt Exile Church of Anglo-Scottish nationals. It sheds new light on the allegiances and underhanded political posturing of many who would later take up prominent positions in the English and Scottish national churches, including John Bale, Richard Cox, Christopher Goodman, John Knox, and William Whittingham.
