What is it about?
The patterns were relatively easy for untrained masons to cut, and they often had a conventional use in manuscript art where they were used (for example) to show bright light, stars or architecture. Thus they were ideal for putting up a 'picture' of heaven on the church building - on the doorway principally, but elsewhere too.
