What is it about?

Submerged-arc furnace is used in the production of ferro alloys. The ores get reduced only after they have descended through about 1 m from the surface. Near the walls of the furnace reduction starts occurring only at about 1.5 m from the top of the charge bed. This knowledge can be exploited to reduce specific energy consumption in the process.

Why is it important?

Models based on this concept will help in rationalising charge redistribution in the furnace and enhance recovery and reduce specific energy consumption.
