What is it about?

What goes on in a child's mind as he or she practices a musical instrument? This study looked at the practice of six middle school musicians. One of the key findings was that students use aural images in multiple ways while practicing. Aural image informs their motivation, goal setting, strategy choice, and ability to self-assess.

Why is it important?

The findings provide numerous implications for helping young musicians to improve the effectiveness of their practice. Music teachers may also notice implications related to the ways in which they guide their rehearsals.

Perspectives

"I don't practice my band music at home until I know how it goes." That quote struck a chord with me. Do we really teach students to read music when we look at the same music daily for weeks on end, or do we teach by rote and then the students use notation simply to remember what fingers to put down? The findings in this study remind us that we need to develop aural skills before students can develop as musicians.
