What is it about?

We studied 20 male perpetrators of intimate partner violence in Mumbai and found that most of them show anxiety and personality psychopathology (presence of personality disorders); around half of them report having been abused or having witnessed abuse in their childhood homes; most of them report liberal attitudes towards women. We describe profiles in detail and recommend intervention modalities that may help to work with this group of men.

Why is it important?

This is the first Indian study on in depth clinical case profiles of male perpetrators of intimate partner violence. Helping to understand characteristics of men who abuse their wives may help to design interventions to reduce intimate partner violence.

Perspectives

This paper emerged from our experiences working with women survivors of intimate partner violence at a crisis counseling center in Mumbai. We realized that working with the husbands/ partners of these women was crucial to bring about a decrease in violence.
