What is it about?

This study documents our experiences with SAAHAS. This was a therapy group for LGBTQIA+ individuals in Mumbai, India. It was run by 2 queer psychologists using an approach that combined affirmation of their identities and acknowledging the context of stigma, and cognitive and behavioural strategies to cope with concerns. Our end of year evaluation suggested that participants found the group to be helpful to improve their mental health and to reduce feelings of isolation.

Why is it important?

There is limited research about intervention modalities for LGBTQIA+ individuals in India. This study documents the first of its kind group therapy approach that can be replicated to provide low cost mental health interventions for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Perspectives

It was a great experience doing this study. As queer psychologists, working for the mental health of the community and adding to the body of research on this often ignored topic, is something we felt passionate about.
