What is it about?

Hearing is very important in children for language development and speech acquisition. Otitis media with effusion may make a child to be hard of hearing thereby not adequately and appropriately responding to commands. This may have a negative effect on their academic performance as well as make them to be erroneously labelled as being stubborn and disobedient. Such children are usually maltreated by subjecting them to repeated beating or other forms of punishment as a form of corrective measure. We have shown that Otitis media with effusion is more prevalent among children with allergic rhinitis than in healthy children. Parents should be aware of it as a possible cause of their wards poor academic performance and social behavior.

Why is it important?

This study provided information about the health of middle ear cleft in children with allergic rhinitis. Our findings implied that the hearing of children with allergic rhinitis is worse than their healthy peers.

Perspectives

I hope this article will sensitize parents or caregivers of children with allergic rhinitis about the possibility of developing hearing difficulty with its associated problems and the need to have routine audiologic check up for them.
