What is it about?
Manual pipetting in microplates is a common laboratory task which can be tedious and error prone due. This task can be made easier and more robust by illuminating specific wells within the microplate to indicate to the user where the pipettor should be placed for each specific pipetting operation. This paper describes and open source platform which can be used to illuminate microplates in a semiautomated fashion when combined with an easy-to-use graphical user interface.

Why is it important?
Manually pipetting in microplates can be a tedious and error prone task. When errors occur, they result in lost time and resources in downstream processes. By using an illumination panel to help guide users during the pipetting process, we can help to reduce or eliminate many errors which can occur during manual pipetting operations.
