What is it about?
Ensuring proper function of laboratory automation often requires the time and attention of an operator to perform routine QC checks. We have leveraged open source hardware and software to automate one of the QC checks routinely performed while dispensing reagents during high throughput screening efforts.

Why is it important?
The automated QC system presented in this paper not only frees the robotic operator to perform other tasks, but also provides a more complete picture of dispenser function over time. Instead of periodically sampling dispenser output, the system monitors the dispenser output for each plate sent to the dispenser. Additionally, it automatically compares requested dispense volumes against measured dispense volumes to automatically generate alerts in real-time, enabling operators to address issues as soon as they occur.
Perspectives
Automated monitoring and QC of liquid dispensing is an application that has utility in a wide variety of fields. By leveraging open source hardware and software, users can easily develop and deploy similar systems to meet their specific liquid handling QC needs.
