What is it about?

The prevalent forms of discrimination, in state-sponsored welfare programmes of UP, push Dalits to the margins and make them vulnerable to poverty. The process of availability, accessibility and affordability of welfare programmes either strengthen the status quo or further emphasize structural inequality. From the data collected from the field, it can be argued that the problems of social exclusion, caste-based discrimination and caste-based dominance are maintained in the village, and the manifestations of these can be even seen in the persistence of landlessness and in the economic domain in problems with employment opportunities and denial of various services.

Why is it important?

It is describing the state society nexus to maintain hegemony and exclude Dalits from welfare schemes. The article captures the narrative from the elected representative and beneficiaries of different welfare schemes.

Perspectives

The best part of this article was to interact with the people while engaging in the field work. I got the enormous response from the people related to the topic which further exposes multidimensional aspects of social exclusion in the rural UP, India.
