What is it about?

Young infants below 16 weeks of age are a particularly sensitive population. The review considers food additive safety in infant formula intended for young infants below 16 weeks of age. The concept of acceptable daily intake (ADI) and it's applicability to young infants is a key consideration in establishing food additive safety.

Why is it important?

The integrated approach is key to an informed, scientifically robust and balanced evaluation of additive safety in this sensitive population. The work also supports the efforts of EFSA and JECFA in particular to re-affirm the safety of additives currently in use as well as future provisions.

Perspectives

I'm very pleased to share the news of this milestone review of food additive safety in early infants and honoured to have been part of the great collaboration across the sector with my former colleagues and experts in the field. It is available as an open access via the link.
