What is it about?

This is a step-by-step how to conduct and debrief an in-class exercise that teaches students about invisible social identity--identities that are not visible upon meeting someone. It involves role plays in small groups to illustrate how common workplace scenarios may inadvertently place people with invisible identities in awkward situations.

Why is it important?

Although there are many exercises available about different aspects of diversity, there are few that deal specifically with invisible identities.

Perspectives

This exercise has been used in graduate and undergraduate courses in the US and abroad with equal success. Students often express "ah hah" moments that will change how they behave in the workplace and show their increased sensitivity to people with identities that differ from theirs.
