What is it about?

The paper is based on 133 interviews with US deportees in Mexico and 21 interviews with the families of deportees and others affected by deportation in the United States during the first 5 months of 2018. It documents the devastating emotional, financial and social impact of deportations of long-term US residents on the deportees themselves, their divided and impoverished families, and their communities.

Why is it important?

The US is pursuing a mass, indiscriminate deportation policy that largely affects long-term residents, with deep ties in the United States. The impact of this policy on deportees, their families, and their communities has severe long-and short-term consequences for these families, their communities and the nation.

Perspectives

This paper provides a direct window on the lives of deportees and their families, reports the results of bi-national study, and includes strong public policy recommendations. It will be particularly valuable to persons interested in the broad impact of Trump-era immigration and deportation policies.
