What is it about?

This paper presents an analysis of Value of Statistical Life (VSL) studies that are based on hedonic wage method. About 30 studies from developed and developing countries are analysed in this article. It attempts to understand and examine the sources of variability observed in the VSL estimates across studies. The meta-analysis helps to determine the possible factors causing such variation in the VSL estimates.

Why is it important?

The factors affecting the VSL estimates are brought together and discussed concisely in this paper. The meta-analysis includes studies from many developing countries like India, Pakistan, China, etc. The results have important implication in understanding the variations in VSL estimates across countries.

Perspectives

This study considers only hedonic wage studies for meta-analysis. The stated preference based studies on VSL may involve various kinds of bias and therefore are not considered in the meta-analysis.
