What is it about?

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the use of novel tobacco products and waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) in emerging adults aged 18 to 24. In addition, this study will examine the trends in the association between different tobacco products and WTS. The conceptual framework for this paper will be an adaptation of the Theory of Emerging Adulthood to help explain WTS usage.

Why is it important?

These results suggest that there is growing interest from emerging adults to experiment with novel tobacco products, as substitutes for cigarettes. This is an important finding, in light of the observation in national surveys of decreases in prevalence of cigarette smoking.
