What is it about?

We studied the 2013 European basketball championship for men hosted by Slovenia to assess whether such events truly generate massive media coverage and, thus, promotion for the host country. It turns out it does not.

Why is it important?

Many countries compete to host sports events of various magnitude. Entities bidding to host them claim these events attract tourists and increased media coverage. This study disproves this claim. If organizers want to secure prominent coverage, they need to promote the event better and make sure it stands out because of (positive) aspects other than athletics. Small and inexperienced countries need to do a better job at organizing and promoting events--or spend money on other initiatives.
