What is it about?

This pilot study explores the occupational challenges of running a small-scale retail establishment, or 'corner store', in Baltimore, MD. By participating in semi-structured interviews (n=4) that focused on worker safety and health, corner store owners explained their experiences as retailers and community members in West Baltimore.

Why is it important?

Baltimore corner stores are a large part of our urban nutrition landscape, and public health professionals incorporate these stores into nutrition programming as venues to support behavior change. Occupational health professionals can support these important small-scale retailers by analyzing their workplace challenges and creating interventions. By supporting these workers, we strengthen both their businesses and their communities.

Perspectives

Baltimore is a vibrant city. I think supporting corner stores by providing occupational health resources could both strengthen current public health nutrition programming and increase economic stability in Baltimore's neighborhoods.
