Health coaching and wellness coaching are defined and differentiated through a discussion of coaching attributes, core competencies, and qualifications and skills, as well as eligibility of those who provide coaching services.

Why is it important?

The increased market demand for wellness and prevention in a variety of settings has spawned a plethora of coach training programs with tremendous variation in program content, core competencies, and qualifications, if any, of those who are trained as coaches. Differentiating health coaching from wellness coaching is critical in that it simplifies a framework for research, thereby shortening the timeline needed to establish effectiveness and gain consensus. More importantly, differentiating these roles will enhance public safety and consumer awareness in a responsible, meaningful way that consumers can understand.

Perspectives

This discussion is the first to delve into the need for differentiating health coaching from wellness coaching. Professional liability for providing coaching services, clients with chronic conditions and co-morbidities, and consumer awareness are three major concerns that support the need for differentiating these two coaching roles.
