Why is it important?

Cardamom is a popular cash crop in Nepal but the production is decreasing due to various issues such as disease in the plants. And hence, it is important to understand the situation of farmers whose livelihoods rely on large cardamom production.

Perspectives

Large cardamom provides livelihoods to many farmers in across Nepal. Being an agrarian country, this cash crop has helped many step out of poverty because of the value it holds in the market. However, over the past 10 years many farmers across Nepal, particularly in the eastern part of Nepal (also considered the hub of cardamom production), have witnessed disease infestation in their farms. This has led to severe consequences such as loss of livelihood activities. Farmers have strived for help from various institutions and mostly they have managed to combat the disease through their own local knowledge. Hence, this paper is a scenario of how coping strategies adopted by farmers facing crisis have worked and what needs to be done from the institutional level to support these people.
