What is it about?

Teaching and learning in Ghana's Senior high schools are guided by the same policy, curriculum, textbooks and examinations yet student achievement in rural, urban and peri-urban schools differ. This paper examined teaching, learning and other school activities to understand the factors that significantly contribute to achievement differentials in different geographic settings.

Why is it important?

Student achievement determines schooling effectiveness. The paper has identified the factors that significantly affect academic achievement and cause differentials in rural, urban and peri-urban schools, which makes it easier for action to be taken by teachers, school heads, education officials and policy makers to institute actions to mitigate the adverse effects of these factors towards promoting quality secondary education.
