What is it about?

The civilian losses in Afghanistan are significant, but were those losses worth the benefit? Weighing the loss of life between civilians and enemies, this study seeks to explore what is an acceptable amount of collateral damage.

Why is it important?

Assessment of an conflict is critical in winning a war. History teaches us that civilian losses work against a campaign. If winning the hearts and minds is central to a war, then civilian losses undermine the mission.

Perspectives

As a former explosive ordnance disposal technician, this research is very insightful. Seeing the complexity of war first-hand prompted me to question how effective military intervention is to combat terrorism. The results of this study should give pause and initiate a deeper understanding of counter-terrorism tactics.
