In sub-Saharan Africa particularly in Nigeria, the age at which women become married influence their fertility behaviour, which in turn affect their level of economic empowerment.

This study is important because it draws attention to the role raising age at first marriage may play in reducing women's childbearing burden, and improving women's level of economic empowerment.

Perspectives

Women's childbearing burden may not reduce in Nigeria until more women are able to delay marriage.
