What is it about?

This article describes a method to perform a review of the literature surrounding accountability in social entrepreneurship. The review method; a scoping review, allows the researcher to find trends and gaps in the literature. This method helps the researcher find areas to investigate based existing literature. Accountability in social entrepreneurship is often discussed but not well defined and so the method was used on this topical research area.

Why is it important?

Scoping reviews are not often done in the management sciences. The method described and the topical area of accountability in social entrepreneurship is used to illustrate the value of determining gaps and trends in the literature prior to performing an indepth literature review on the gap or trend that will then be researched.

Perspectives

The social science literature is rich with information. Using the power of web based searches allows the use of scoping reviews to get a sense for a topical area prior to deeper investigations and refinement of research questions. I believe that social entrepreneurship is a very topical area considering societal concerns with social responsibility and that the issue of accountability is not well researched. This scoping review allowed me to see gaps and trends that will inform indepth research into this subject area.
