What is it about?

In this study we examined the impact of a Stop Smoking Before Surgery (SSBS) program in a health authority where responsibility for surgical services is shared by health professionals in regional centres and outlying communities.

Why is it important?

Because smoking cessation before surgery has been shown to optimize surgical outcomes, there is an urgent need to develop approaches to support cessation among patients who smoke waiting for elective surgery.
