Why is it important?
The article is important in that it demonstrates democracy, young and incipient one, can increase the chance of militarized interstate disputes (MIDs) in the context of international rivalries, notably Asian rivalries.
Perspectives
This is one of the few in which Asian rivalries receive primary theoretical attention. It is also one of the rare attempts to empirically examine the relationship between rivalries and MIDs using a large dataset.
