Why is it important?
Optic nerve inflammation is a serious and potentially permanently disabling disease of the eye. There are currently no treatments for acute optic neuritis. Treatments targeting optic nerve protection are urgently needed.
Perspectives
The study while did not meet its enrollment goal did not show any hint of efficacy in the subjects who received the lipoic acid. Lipoic acid taken orally for 6 weeks after optic neuritis diagnosis is safe. Our study highlights unique challenges in studying a disease like acute optic neuritis where getting the subjects who meet the qualifying criteria in timely fashion for the study can be difficult.
