What is it about?

Apparent aspiration is a notable adverse event during gastrointestinal endoscopy (GIE), but data about the risk of pneumonia and lower respiratory tract infection following GIE, particularly in the high risk group of elderly patients, is scarce. Respiratory symptoms occur quite often in more than five percent. Hence, we evaluated the risk of pneumonia and lower respiratory tract infections (LRI) after GIE under sedation compared to matched control patients.

Why is it important?

Compared to matched controls GIE is associated to both, pneumonia and LRI in the subgroup of elderly patients while inflammatory activation was seen in all age groups.

Perspectives

We hope that our work raises awareness to the potential risk of silent aspiration and encourages to increase the scientific efforts on the subject.
