What is it about?

ED bypass is associated with decreased mortality in STEMI in both stable and unstable patients presenting with cardiogenic shock.

Why is it important?

The number needed to be treated in order to save one additional life is particularly low (approximately 10) in patients with cardiogenic shock, when the ED is bypassed for timely reperfusion.

Perspectives

Protocols promoting direct transport from the scene to the catheterization laboratory can improve survival in STEMI patients, particularly in those with cardiogenic shock. Further research is required to assess whether implementing feedback-driven quality control management strategies for timely reperfusion impact on the frequency of ED bypass and survival of these patients.
