What is it about?

This web-based calculator shows where a patient falls in the “data-zones” of the SPRINT trial (a large randomized controlled trial of blood pressure targets for patients with hypertension) and gives a breakdown of which characteristics are most similar or dissimilar to the typical trial participants. The calculator is programmed in R, freely available worldwide, and can be used as a web app on conventional computers as well as mobile devices. Why is it important?

It is nearly impossible for clinicians to remember the characteristics of a specific trial’s participants when making decisions about patients sitting in front of them. For SPRINT, this calculator can help.

Perspectives

Often, I see patients whose medical problems call to mind specific clinical trials, but it can be difficult to determine how/if these patients resemble those studied in the trial. I wonder if they occupy a 'data-free zone' because no trial studied such patients. For instance, which trials on hypertension included large numbers of octogenarians with severe kidney disease? This calculator is a way to quantify the 'data-free zone' of the SPRINT trial and determine if a specific patient is well-represented by the trial or not.
