What is it about?
Even low-level air pollution decreases the pumping function of the human heart.

Why is it important?
It is the first study using echocardiography to assess heart function in the the general population. Using the residential address of each participant, we could relate each person's heart function to her/his own exposure to fine particulate.
Perspectives
Heart failure affects millions of people worldwide and carries a health care cost higher than cancer. We demonstrated that air pollution contributes to a symptomatic heart dysfunction, which over time might progress to heart failure.
