What is it about?
Psychosocial risk factors such as loneliness or marital strife can rival the effect of the more traditional risk factors (eg. smoking). These psychosocial factors influence 'social integration' which can influence (in a positive or negative manner) subsequent cardiovascular health and well being. This editorial discusses these concepts.

Why is it important?
The inclusion of assessment modalities in a Cardiac Rehabilitation or Wellness Program are important. Otherwise, it may be difficult to affect the more traditional risk factors and determinants of health.
Perspectives
My involvement in Cardiac Rehabilitation convinced me that a multifactorial perspective was essential to help patients through their journey of recovery. Although it may be difficult, the determination and hopefully, amelioration, of psychosocial risk factors are important for optimal treatment.
