What is it about?

This paper discusses the evolution of digital media from being in hands of capital-intensive industries to users just like you. This trend originated the rise of user-generated content and is reshaping the way we teach. We now request students to produce learner-generated digital media (LGDM) assignments to learn the subject content but they need to learn the grammar of the digital age which is the digital media principles.

Why is it important?

The digital media principles are well-known in the digital media industry production but not outside this field. As students now need to produce digital content as part of their assignments, it cannot be guesswork anymore. The paper highlights the importance of these principles and proposed the digital media principles framework to help educators to identify the basic rules of the grammar of the digital age.

Perspectives

Learner-generated digital media should be used with a dual purpose: as a pedagogical and digital media agent. The students should engage in learning the subject content via multiple representations (audio, images, animations, video) of their knowledge. In that regard, teaching the digital media principles will truly foster digital media literacy and communication in the digital space.
