What is it about?

The response of plain concrete specimens to an impact was examined experimentally. The influence of using glass fiber reinforced polymer sheets to strengthen plain concrete panels on the performance of concrete under impact was observed. The main findings show that strengthening plain concrete panels with glass fiber reinforced polymer sheets showed satisfactory performance under the impact load; the glass fiber reinforced polymer sheets can be used for strengthening or upgrading concrete structures to improve their resistance against impact. Also, the location of the glass fiber reinforced polymer sheet affects the front and rear face craters.

Why is it important?

The glass fiber reinforced polymer sheets (GFRP) can be used for strengthening or upgrading concrete structures to improve their resistance against impact. The case of specimens with rear GFRP sheet, the peak impact load was about 23% higher than that of the specimen without GFRP sheet due to the strengthening effect of GFRP. Finally, the GFRP with epoxy resin showed superior performance under the impact load. It can be used to improve the impact resistance of concrete panels (walls and slabs); however, further studies are still needed.
